What is this AFIT Anyway??
by Joan Parker, AFIT Liaison
The
Arizona Forum for Improvement of Taxation
(AFIT)
was formed over 15 years ago patterned after a similar organization in
Indiana. The mission statement of AFIT is as follows: To improve and
maintain an open communication and liaison among the Internal Revenue
Service, Arizona tax agencies and practitioners for the mutual benefit
of them and their customers, the Arizona taxpayer.
The
membership in AFIT consists of The Arizona Bar, The Arizona Society of
Certified Public Accountants, The Enrolled Agents Society of Arizona
and the Arizona Society of Practicing Accountants. Each organization
elects two members to serve on the Board of Directors. Meetings are
held once a month on the 4th
Friday of the month at the University Club in downtown Phoenix. At
the present, our liaison members include the Internal Revenue Service,
the Arizona Department of Revenue and the City of Phoenix.
There
are two committees within the AFIT organization. They are Clarity and
Consistency which deals mostly with collection issues and Audit and
Compliance which deals with audit issues. We also have liaison
members from the above organizations who attend these committee
meetings.
In
addition, AFIT sponsors two seminars a year. These 4 hour seminars
cover any “hot topics” and new legislation. They are very reasonably
priced and offer CPE for our member constituents.
We
are fortunate to have the Phoenix Taxpayer Advocate attend most of our
Board Meetings along with the Community Relations Executive, Karen
Mortimer, from the Arizona Department of Revenue.
If
any of our ASPA members are having a problem with any of the above
organizations, please contact Bill Arnold (602) 274-1841 or Joan
Parker (480) 502-6885. Bill and Joan are the ASPA representatives on
the Board and can usually get answers from the proper authority.
ASPA
is fortunate to have been asked to be a part of this organization and
our contacts over the years have only enhanced the value of membership
in ASPA.
