Hurricane Katrina Bulletin Board

Many NSA members and their families have been affected by the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Communications are quite difficult and it is hard to connect to people.  Please feel free to use this bulletin board to reach NSA members, friends, and family.  Go to www.nsacct.org  and click on the Hurricane Bulletin Board link to write, read, or reply to postings.

 NSA Convention Report

Having just returned from NSA’s 60th annual convention held in Las Vegas, Nevada I want everyone to know it was such a busy time, but rewarding too.  Wednesday I attended the Board of Governors Meeting which is open to all members. I recommend that any NSA member attend a Board of Governors meeting to see our members hard at work guiding our organization.

Thursday was the first business session at Convention.  We heard from IRS Deputy Commissioner for Operations and Support, John M Dalrymple.  He gave a very informative update on developments at IRS.  Candidates running for office were introduced.  Next event was the ACAT luncheon where ACAT President (and ASPA member), Jack Schabow gave an update on ACAT programs.  Then it was on to a CPE session followed by District Caucuses.  It was also a time for everyone from District X to talk and discuss any issues of concern, and to hear from candidates for office.  Our first timers, Mary Molano and Sherrill Clark were invited to a reception just for first time attendees.  At the reception they met other first timers and had the opportunity to meet and ask questions of  NSA staff and officers.

Thursday evening was time for some fun.  There was a Candidates Reception and Texas Hold ‘em Tournament sponsored by Forrest T Jones & Co.  Jo Ann Sabbagh, ASPA Tucson member, was the 2nd place winner!

Friday there was more CPE.  ASPA President, John Folse attended the ASO Presidents Luncheon.  In the afternoon there was State Directors Training and AZ Associate State Directors, Mary Molano and Sherrill Clark attended.  Lynn Holomon and I were among the speakers.

Saturday was packed with activities from the morning Scholarship walk to the Installation Banquet in the evening.  In the morning after the walk we all attended the Awards breakfast and Auction Spectacular.  At the Awards breakfast Lynn Holomon accepted the Keith Billings Memorial Award for the 2005 State Publication of the Year, Division I, awarded to our ASPA newsletter the Arizona Roundup.  Jeff Adelstone received special recognition and an award for a speech he gave at convention last year about the importance of being a member of NSA which was reprinted in many state society newsletters, including the Arizona Roundup.

At the last business session we had some great CPE, elections and committee reports.  Wanda Samek, from Texas, was elected President; Robert Fukuhara, from Hawaii, was elected First Vice President; and Andrew Morehead, from Colorado, was elected Second Vice President.  Others elected as District Governors were District 1—Milton Martin, District 3—Christine Giovetti, District 5—Harlan Rose, District 7—Sharon Cook, District 9—Rex Cruz and District 11—James Moo.  State Directors for Districts 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 were elected and I was elected to my second term as Arizona State Director. There was a very lively debate on the By-Law amendment which was eventually tabled.

On Saturday evening we attended the President’s Reception and Installation Banquet where Jeff Adelstone installed the officers.  Then after entertainment by some fantastic acrobats many of us danced the night away.

Next year I hope many more members will attend the convention in Providence, Rhode Island.  Thank you to all the delegates from Arizona for helping to make the convention a memorable event and congratulations again to Lynn for giving us an Award Winning publication.
